More summer than fall with beauty still abundant. Yesterday the Freedom Trail, a walk in Boston, overnight with friends, Lucinda and Clarisse. And then to Concord. It all still lingers:

In Russia Honey Spas is celebrated on August 14. This is the day on which the honey is blessed. Honey Spas marks the beginning of honey harvest. According to common belief, it is the day when swallows leave for the winter. This is considered to be a sign that summer is leaving. Vacant swallow nests resemble honey combs. Swallows are the birds, that according to the myth tried to spare Christ from suffering on the cross for a long time, and cried that he is already dead. Spas means saviour. There are three holidays called Spas. Each of them is dedicated to one sacred part of the cross. August 14 is also the day on which according to the legend Russia was christened.

Dear Gerald:
On July 28-30 I was in a mountain place (Crasna-Covasna) at SARM’s "Perseids" camp, where I coordinated an astropoetry show (with torches
signifying fireballs and with "princesses of astropoetry"). Among "live" readings, I read some astropoems by authors who were not there, including your May Dejagascar haiku.

Today I worked a summer piece with my fellow Gabriel Ivanescu. If you consider our summer piece is acceptable for the haiku project, and if you don't mind, please post it as you did a few months ago with our spring piece.

Falling Leaves will be a collection of haiku, senryu, tanka, haibun, haiga and other works celebrating the season of autumn as it enfolds.

It will run from August 1st to October 30th 2006.

The blog is a follow-on from Ukku Spring Haiku and Summer Haiku.

At the end of the month Summer Haiku will have been going for its alloted three months.

J Andrew Lockhart and myself have agreed to set up an Autumn blog to run from August 1st until October 30th.

It will operate along much the same lines as this and the original Ukku Spring Haiku blog.

We will say more about this towards the end of the month once we've set the basics up.

I was reading Dustin's post re a fall group while listening to Pandora when "Summer is over" by Fred Eaglesmith came up. Without wanting to wish away the all-too-brief summer, the lyrics seemed appropriate to the theme and not unhaiku-esque

"Well summer is over, the turnstiles are seized,
The ferris wheel turns by itself in the breeze.
And the big diesel engines idle out on the lawn.
Summer is over and my baby's gone.
And the roller coaster pulls at its pins.
The bumper boats drift out and they drift back in.
And the September breezes are bringing winter along.
Summer is over and my baby's gone."

I love the recent haiku. I think the kigo idea is really working well. Also, I wanted to go ahead and get the word out that we will need someone to run the fall haiku blog. I think each session should be run by a new poet. I sure do hope we continue these seasonal group sessions.

Poets,

Paul brought up a fun idea for this group, so I'm going to roll with it and see how it works. I like the idea of a summer kigo every few days . You can either reply to the day's kigo post with your haiku, or you can create your own post. I know a lot of you guys and gals are away from the computer these days. However, I just want to try and get some writing done.

I, like Paul, try to write a haiku a day, at least, even if my muse is being a whore. I hope you guys and gals don't stop writing even when you feel you have nothing to write. Haiku waits for us around every corner, and that is what I love so much about this art.

Friends,

I don't know if I've done something wrong, or if this is just how it is during the summer, but the sharing of haiku here at the summer haiku blog is pretty "blah" right now. If I've not done a good job as moderator, I'm sorry. However, I hope to see some summer haiku in the coming weeks.
